Inflation outlook

In last month’s inflation update, I set out my expectations for inflation to move from 3.37% in December to 2.93% in January. In the event, the year-on-year increase in headline CPI came in at 3.01%. That is close enough for my purposes.

Absent any seismic shocks, British inflation is likely to settle close to the 2.0% target from April onward. That will be welcome news for policymakers in Threadneedle Street and in Downing Street as well.

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is charged with keeping inflation, measured by the year-on-year change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), at 2%.
